How does 3D printing work?
Object printing, also known as 3D printing, is on the rise. More and more designers and artists are using this method to create unusual and complex objects. The possibilities are endless: a 3D printer gives an awful lot of freedom, and can print the most complex shapes. In this way, you go very quickly from the craziest digital idea to an actual tangible object.
The 3D printing technique works by using very small layers of plastic or other material, which are piled up. 3DMarc uses two types of printers, so we can always guarantee the best results:
- An SDM printer, for precision down to 0.01mm
- An SLA printer, which can print precisely to 0.001mm (smaller objects).
With exceptional precision, the 3D printer builds an object, layer by layer. The final result is a tangible version of the desired object. From fat gadget to custom animated puppet, from personalized keychain to complete maquette: there are an awful lot of applications to think of.
From STL file to tangible object
A 3D printer works from digital files. That digital design details how the object to be made should look. That model can be created with 3D printer software. If you want to get started yourself, more and more user-friendly programs can be found that allow you to easily design 3D objects.
The digital file you created is converted to a so-called STL file. In it, the design is divided into lots of tiny layers. Using these layers, which are sometimes only a hundredth of a millimeter thick, the printer builds the object out of the desired material.
Some people make their digital designs themselves. It is also possible to find 3D files on special websites.

What does it cost to have an object printed?
